As part of the Americorps Students in
Service Program, two students from the University of Minnesota, Morris
organized and implemented a community sustainability fair for Stevens
County residents. This event, titled 'Cookies, Cocoa, and Carbon
Neutrality', featured several local groups devoted to sustainability
in west central Minnesota. Fair participants shared information about
how Morris's two wind turbines and biomass gasification plant work,
where to find local food co-ops, how the community gym's pool is
heated completely by solar panels, how individuals can reduce their
energy use at home, how to maintain an organic garden, and many other
sustainability topics. Additionally, the university Chemistry Club
brought out their sun ovens and baked solar cookies for attendees
while teaching residents how to cook by solar power.
