Description
Aurora achieved a new level of sustainability when it was designated a Green Power Community by the US EPA. At a city council meeting on Feb 22, 2011, Alexis Cain of the US EPA conferred the honor of becoming a Green Power Community upon Aurora, the first city to achieve this distinction in Illinois. Aurora became an EPA Green Power Community when 2% of electricity consumed by its residents, businesses and municipal operations came from renewable sources. To maintain its status as a Green Power Community, the amount of renewable electricity consumed must increase to 3% in 2012.
