Description

Small Little Farm is, as the name implies, a small place, a homestead farm, located in rolling Fauquier County just south of Warrenton and run by a retired Navy officer, who now works as a Naturalist, when not working the homestead. The farm sports a variety of small endeavors. It has a few horses, mostly miniature size with a foal due every spring. Chickens of old non-commercial and heritage breeds roam their pasture with their Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog to produce their tasty eggs of all shell colors without having to worry about being eaten by foxes. . Seasonally, visitors can hear the baa's of a few orphan lambs that are raised for regional flock owners, to later return to their home flocks.

Small Little Farm's CSA grows exclusively for its members. It strives to offer the tastiest of non-commercial vegetables, including both new and heirloom varieties, grown as organically as possible. The farm's horses provide the soil amendments and organic approved pesticides are used only as a last resort if necessary to save a crop. The farm's pastured chickens are also non-commercial production and heritage breeds, providing the fresh eggs provided with each membership. The atmosphere is relaxed, slow-paced and peaceful. Member families are welcome to participate in the planting, tending or harvesting of their food to enjoy nature's atmosphere, even if only for a half hour during the entire season, but this is not required. Members are also welcome to just come and sit and watch the plants grow for a while, or visit and show children where their food comes from. Children may "adopt" a plant (plant labels will identify these special plants) and help with planting or harvesting of its fruit at the proper time. The weekly vegetable share is sized for what a family of four might consume of the particular vegetables during a week, but shares may exceed this level during main harvest periods.

Members are encouraged to share, freeze or can any excess. Each weekly share also includes one dozen fresh eggs. Weekly shares are available for pick up at the farm on Mondays from 12:00-7:00 p.m. Members must provide 2 coolers (medium or large size) and 2 cloth grocery bags for packing of their weekly shares. One set will be at the farm for packing the next week's share while one set is used to transport the share to the member's home. Members must bring back the empty cooler and grocery bag each week, as well as the empty egg carton (egg cartons are provided by the farm). Sign-ups are accepted from 1 Jan-31 Mar each year. Payment for half of the share cost ($250) is due at sign up to reserve your membership. The remaining half ($250) is due at the first week's share pick up. If there are no memberships left, you are welcome to request to be put on the waiting list. Payment by cash or check. Checks payable to Small Little Farm. Feedback from members is welcome any time. At the end of the year, members will be given a feedback form that they may optionally fill out. Feedback is used to improve your CSA and members are encouraged to offer it.
