High Vista Community Garden, Mills River, North Carolina

Summary
A cooperative venture by people living in the High Vista Golf and Community, Old Haywood Road, Mills River, NC.
Description
Our garden began in March 2011 with a potluck dinner among neighbors to discuss cooperative gardening. 22 families were represented in the first year. We grew four "community crops," summer and winter squash, tomatoes, bush and pole beans, and corn, and each had a personal unit to garden as well. All our practices are organic. In addition to reaping deepened relationships and bountiful produce for our families, we were able to donate over 200 pounds of produce to local food banks and churches. We expect to continue and intend to capitalize on our cooperation and skill-building to move forward in the model of Transition Towns U.S., expanding our garden and our local resiliency for a future less dependent on fossil fuel.
